High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Fighter Mafia was a group of U.S. Air Force officers and civilian defense analysts who, in the 1970s, advocated the use of John Boyds Energy Maneuverability (EM) theory to develop fighter aircraft. The theory enabled quantitative onetoone comparison of the performance of aircraft in terms of air combat maneuvering, and identified deficiencies with both designs in service and proposed designs of the time. They influenced the specifications of the FX, and went on to independently develop specifications for the Light Weight Fighter. The nickname, a professional jest coined by an Air Force member of Italian heritage, was a rejoinder to the Bomber Mafia, theorists at the Air Corps Tactical School in the 1930s whose ideas led to the primacy of strategic bombing over the fighter within the Air Force. In this novel of the 1920s South, former soldier Sam Simoneaux becomes obsessed with finding a kidnapped girl who was taken from the department store where he works as a security guard. His quest takes him back in virtual time, as he travels up the mighty Mississippi on a roaring steamboat, on through the gradually developing river towns, and deep into the brutal backwoods of Arkansas, where modern life is nothing but a myth. Eventually he finds the clues he needs to solve the mystery, but a hidden connection to his own haunted past causes thoughts of revenge to take precedence over justice in his clouded judgment. Gautreaux is a fantastic, highly acclaimed writer who might break through to a wider audience with this thrilling, evocative portrait of the eerie unease that hampered the development of the South between the world wars.
